Data analytics and data science are often used interchangeably. In practice, they describe related disciplines with different centers of gravity.
Data analytics
Analytics focuses on answering defined questions with existing data, typically using SQL, statistics, and visualization. Its output is usually insight communicated to decision-makers.
Data science
Data science leans toward building models and systems — predictive models, recommendation engines, classification pipelines — often using programming and machine learning. Its output is frequently software.
Why the distinction is useful
Knowing which kind of work a problem needs helps organizations staff it correctly and set appropriate expectations about timelines and outcomes.
